Health Impact: The Legalization of Marijuana in California

The fight to legalize marijuana has been going on for decades. As of today, only 10 countries in the world have tolerated the personal usage of marijuana in limited quantities, while many more allow the medicinal usage, including Canada, Australia, and 14 states in the United States. However, Proposition 19, otherwise known as the “Regulate, Control, and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010”, has been proposed for the state of California. If passed, it would legalize a variety of personal marijuana related activities. Also if Prop 19 was to pass, then there would also be a massive impact on the state’s health care status.

Effects of Marijuana

Even by itself, marijuana has a pretty negative connotation these days. To better understand the effects of passing Prop 19, it would be crucial to actually know what Marijuana can do to one’s body. The substance that causes the main effects of marijuana is THC, or delta-9-hydrocannabinol.

When THC begins to kick in, the user will usually experience a distorted perception from your senses, memory loss, loss of coordination, the inability to think straight, increased heart rate, decreased blood pressure, and mood swings. After using marijuana, there are also lasting negative effects on the brain (hallucinations and impaired memory), the lung (infections and obstructed airways), and the heart (increased risk for a heart attack). There has also been a study where it was shown that with the carcinogens found in marijuana, there has been a possible increase in risk for cancer.

Obviously, the legalization of marijuana wouldn’t be even considered if it weren’t for a few distinct positives either. The euphoria is one of the main lures for marijuana, and can help those in severe pain for example (ergo why some countries decided to legalize the medicinal use of marijuana). In addition, marijuana can increase one’s appetite, also good for medicinal use.

Impact on Healthcare

Among others, the healthcare industry will be severely impacted if this proposition was to go through. Passing this proposition is a double edged sword, and one should look at both sides to truly understand the overall effect.

First off, passing this proposition will generate a lot of tax dollars. Not only will the state no longer need to enforce the taking of marijuana (or as heavily at least), but the proposition also states that the local governments will be able to collect marijuana related taxes and fees. Let’s be honest here. With the proposition passed, there will be an enormous increase in the amount of people who would take marijuana. That means a whole lot more money that’s taken in by the government. Although indirect, some of this money will flow into the healthcare system, helping its growth.

Then there’s the downside. Looking at the effects of marijuana, coupled with the fact that marijuana users will certainly increase (at least in the public’s eyes), there will be a drastic increase in those with negative effects due to the intake of marijuana. Indeed, there will be an increased number of people who need to be cared for. This will add even more stress on the health care system, and will most likely cause an overall decreased quality. More people to care for means less resources for the individual.

At first glance, the second consequence will most likely override the first. While the opposite is possible, it is just more likely that the massive increase in people needing care from marijuana effects will negate the improvements to the quality of the health care system created from more tax dollars collected.

As of now, the US government reports that over 102 million Americans have used marijuana in their lifetimes, and 15 million of those confessing to using it regularly. Obviously, there are probably a lot more people who would not willingly say that they are users. If this proposition is passed, then that number will jump. All I have to say to the health care system is, good luck.

Nebraska residents considering a career as a certified nursing assistant must, as a first step, complete a state-approved training program.

Since 1987, every state in the U.S. has been federally required to approve and regulate their own in-state certified nurse aide training programs. Chef Stephanie Peterson's Guide on How to Store Healthy Meals in a Jar

Professional Chef Stephanie Peterson, better known as Chef Tess, said Saturday, "Today I am going to tell you why you should have a food storage." Peterson explained to audience members at Honeyville Farms, how to save money and time by storing food long term. "I've relied on the advice to store a full year's supply of food for my family." Peterson said.

Every Saturday at Honeyville Farms located in Chandler, Arizona the store offers free classes for people that are headlined by professional chefs all over the country. This past Saturday Peterson demonstrated meal planning for emergency and every day life in a jar.

Peterson said, "I planned seven meals, one each night of the week, and then figured getting 52 of each meal in my food storage to have on hand." Thus was born, "The 52 Method Meals in a Jar Convenience Meal Planning for Emergency and Every Day."

"I wanted my menu plan to be concise and in one spot," Peterson said. The purpose of her plan was to store food that had a shelf life of five to seven years. The meals she picked out had to simple and easy for her kids to make. The "add water only" rule was a big concept I kept in mind.

Peterson said the first time she shared her concept with an emergency preparedness enthusiast, that maybe this is something other people can use. Home canning safety was a huge concern for Peterson. Once she was introduced to fried freeze dried fruits along with the dehydration methods she cheered. "97 % of the nutritional value of the food is preserved when food is freeze dried," Peterson said.

Later on during the cooking demonstration, Peterson went on to answer questions from the audience. Most people asked Peterson the simple question, "What jar size should I use?" Peterson said she would cut the recipes in half and used for smaller families. Another question asked by audience members was, "Do the foods have to be dry foods?" Peterson said all the food have to be dried food because the risk of bacteria forming.

Peterson demonstrated a variety of meals in a jar such as personal sized green and lean protein veggie hearty soup, classic chili, and double cheeseburger hamburger skillet meal just to name a few. After the cooking demonstrations Peterson signed cookbooks for the audience.

"She is energizing and uses a little bit of humor to lighten it up," Local Honeyville Farms Customer Tim Swamsom said. "I found it Chef Tess's demonstration educational. I've been to other events of hers."

"Chef Tess is a very good chef and I find her very educational," Honeyville Farms Employee
David Mackey said. "She is fun and entertaining. I've heard her speak before and she is the usual on Saturdays."

Kashi Lemongrass Coconut Chicken: Crunchy, Healthy Goodness

Usually when I hear the name "Kashi", I think "lots of crunchy, nutty breakfast stuff from Japan." That, to me, still describes their cereal, but Kashi has slowly but surely expanded their product line to snack bars, crackers, waffles and frozen meals. Kashi seems to be ready to make their stake in the healthy eating industry.

I decided to give one of their frozen meals a try. I chose the lemongrass coconut chicken meal because I'm a big coconut fan and lemongrass seems like a flavor not often used in healthy meals. Would Kashi stack up against other healthy, frozen foods, or should they just stick to cereal for people that really like their fiber?

Ingredients. Other than the lemongrass and coconut, Kashi has plenty of ingredients in this meal. Broccoli florets, carrot slivers, snap peas are nice, natural decorations. There's also Kashi's signature Pilaf blend- that trademark crunch you get from all kinds of wheats and barlies. For you allergy people, the Kashi Lemongrass Coconut chicken does contain soy and milk products.

Nutrition. For the one serving you get in the Lemongrass Coconut Chicken meal, Kashi packs a few small punches. There are 300 calories, 8 grams of fat, 18 grams of protein, 7 fiber grams, and 38 grams of carbs. The Lemongrass Coconut Chicken also has 680 milligrams of salt, so watch your intake for the rest of the day!

I was surprised to see that there was a significant amount of Vitamin A (40% of the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance) and Vitamin C (20%) in the Kashi meal.

Taste. Crunchy. Very crunchy. You can definitely taste the Kashi crunch that is lead by cooked quinoa. I suspect there's more than 7 grams of fiber in the Lemongrass Coconut Chicken. However, the lemongrass flavoring comes out once you get used to the initial overall texture in the meal. It's not long before your tongue gets a hold of the coconut and then finally the chicken. This meal is definitely an acquired taste if you've never had Kashi products, but once it gets going, the Lemongrass Coconut Chicken is pretty good and far from bland. It's not the usual "chicken and rice" meal, and it's not over-seasoned in salt and garlic.

If you are into something daring, this is the Kashi frozen meal for you. An unusual but palatable taste, the Lemongrass Coconut Chicken is great to throw in your lunch plans if you're feeling your menu is getting boring.

Adjust Your Food Budget for a Healthy Future

Being budget minded has never been a strong attribute that I subscribe to. Budget has always being a southern word meant to request a cold beer. So when my wife decided to leave the military and go to college I had to cut ties with my southern linguistic skills and find creative ways to limit expenses.

Our biggest down fall was our food costs. We were eating out almost every night and in some cases two times a day. For two people the cost would range from $50 to $100 a day which is $1,500 to $3,000 a month. This was a cost that could no longer be considered affordable and had to be dealt with.

The quick answer for this problem was obvious, stop eating out. The harder answer meant that someone was going to have to pick up a frying pan. With my wife a full time student it only seemed fair that I handle the task. I'm no chef Irvine and after a few dinners, my wife fully agreed. I always thought blanch was one of the ladies on the Golden Girls. Guess I was wrong.

Over a period of time my cuisine education had improved. What did not improve were my shopping habits. I would walk up and down the aisles stacking stuff into the basket. I made all the typical rookie mistakes such as shopping while hungry, not going with a planned out list and thinking that buying in bulk was a price saver. I figured we were cutting costs no matter what I bought and for the most part we were. Going from $1,500 a month to $600 was awesome.

Following a recipe one day, I reached into the spice cabinet and noticed I had three jars of ground cumin, unopened. I had no clue what the stuff was in the first place and now I had three of them. Like a frying pan to the head I realized I needed to be more organized when shopping.

The first step was to take an inventory of the things I already had. Some of it was expired and most of it I had no clue what it was or how to use it. We decided it would be best to do weekly shopping trips with a planned out menu for the week. This included all three meals for both of us.

I decided to start the list based on expiration dates of things we already had. Then I search the internet for meal ideas using the item and go from there. With a planned out menu we have noticed that there are fewer left overs going bad and that we tend to eat a lot healthier. We have cut out a lot of the quick and easy meals in exchange for meals that are just as easy to make yet cost a lot less.

After a few months, the cabinets and fridge appear to be empty but our food costs are down to $300 a month. By applying more attention and focus on our food costs we have saved more money than planned. This extra money has allowed us to pay off other expenses a lot sooner than expected. A very surprising yet very happily found treasure I might add, we both have lost weight due to this change.

Healthy Snacks for Busy Moms

As any busy mom can tell you, there are days when you simply have no time to take a bite of food. I find myself in this predicament more often than I should. It's actually a bad situation to let yourself get into, because when the hypoglycemic attack hits, you're eating everything in site, most of which isn't good for you in the least. Listed below are some healthy snacks for busy moms which I use to curb my own hunger with. Including these snacks in your diet will help to avoid low blood sugar levels that cause you to crash.

Rice Cakes

I've made a habit of keeping rice cakes in my cupboard. They're quick to grab and go with, as well as eat anytime your at home and hungry. There's also a nice variety of different flavors to choose from as well. They're gluten free, and in many cases dairy free for those with food allergies, and just two will keep hunger at bay for quite awhile.

Apples and Cheese

There's no doubt that an apple a day does keep the doctor away. However, when you're a busy mom with errands, kids and work, throwing some cheese in the mix will keep the hunger at bay even longer. Not only that, you'll get a bit more calcium as well as a nice burst of flavor when you combine these two. Make it even easier by using string cheese for quick access without any slicing involved. Just toss both of these in your purse to grab while you're on the go.

Granola Bars

With such a wide variety of granola bars to choose from, why not purchase some not only for your kitchen cupboard but also your car? After a hypoglycemic surge while driving, I decided that was going to be my remedy in an attempt to prevent that problem in the future. Not only are they good for keeping your blood sugar level up, but they're a nice way to add fiber to your diet.

Peppers and Hummus

You can purchase some great tasting hummus blends in just about every grocery store. I usually keep a tasty container of Athenos spicy three pepper hummus in the fridge, along with some red and green sliced peppers to use for healthy dipping. There's an array of hummus to choose from so it's easy to find one that tickles your tastebuds.This makes a satisfying snack which can last for hours.
