hCG, Novarel, Pregnyl

Description: hCG, Pregnyl and Novarel contain human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). HCG is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the placenta. It is indicated for the induction of ovulation and pregnancy in the anovulatory, infertile women in whom the cause of anovulation is secondary and not due to primary ovarian failure.

How It Works: HCG is administered as an injection intramuscularly or subcutaneously depending on the physician’s instructions. HCG is virtually identical to that of pituitary luteinizing hormone (LH). During the normal menstrual cycle, LH participates with follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in the development and maturation of the normal ovarian follicle, and the mid-cycle LH surge triggers ovulation. During an assisted reproductive cycle (ART), hCG is used to induce egg maturation and trigger ovulation (the release of an egg(s) from the ovary) in women who have been treated with ovulation inducing medications. Potential Side Effects: Side effects that may occur include: headache, irritability, restlessness, depression, fatigue, enlargement/rupture of pre-existing ovarian cysts, and fluid retention. The risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) should be discussed with your physician prior to treatment. Early warning signs include severe pelvic pain, nausea, vomiting and weight gain.

If you experience an allergic reaction: difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; or hives; seek emergency medical attention immediately. And if at any time you experience: pain, warmth, redness, numbness, or tingling in an arm or leg; confusion, severe dizziness or severe headache, seek medical attention immediately.

PLEASE NOTE: If these or any other side effects occur, contact your physician.

Storage: Pregnyl and Novarel should be stored at controlled room temperature 59-86ºF. After mixing, it must be stored in a refrigerator and used within 30 days or 60 days depending on the product.
